Our mission at Liminal Photography Project is to provide free portraiture photography to people facing challenges or experiencing transitions, at no cost to them. At its highest level, this work is rooted in fostering connection, inclusivity and empowerment. We believe a giving economy is the most sustainable and powerful way to take care of everyone.

We envision a future for Liminal Photography that sustainably provides the community service of free portraiture to people in transition, cultivates a professional mentorship community comprised of service-driven experienced and student photographers, and creates art capable of sparking important conversations that can lead to a more thoughtful and humane society.

Validating liminal or uncertain times from a mental health perspective is important for many reasons. It leads to normalization of experience, reduction of stigma, and builds Supportive Communities.

The Founder

Palmares Bustamante was raised by a first generation single mother, and learned throughout her life that there was a lack of resources and understanding for non-traditional family dynamics. She firmly believes that every kind of family deserves to be respected, accepted, and normalized in our communities.  Through this project she hopes to reflect those ideals by using art as a tool to connect.  With support from the Girls Write Now program, she is excited to continue expanding her mission. You can hear more about her journey through her personal website.

Future Steps

We are working on expanding to form collaborations with other non-profit organizations, and create positions for other artists/ photographers to support the project. Additionally, we are branching out the project to include business pictures, headshots, and school photos for free.
